LIVE & DIE IN AFRICA

Happy Saturday fellow nomads! Y’all doing alright? Yeah? Great!

Earlier on in the year, I stumbled on a news piece about how some foreign world leader called African countries shitholes. I was vexed by this statement, to say the least. As a child of the African continent, I understand that we’re yet to catch up with first world countries in terms of technological advancements. We are, however, making our way there slowly but surely. S/O to the creators at Marvel Studios for Black Panther who clearly highlighted the whole element of Africanism, inspiring young children- who for the first time ever had not only black super heroes, but also African super heroes. I know watching the movie had many Black and African people hella proud to see super heroes who looked like them on the big screen. I have, therefore, taken it upon myself to travel around Kenya and Africa every so often so that the world comes to terms that Africa is the shit and not a shithole. Wakanda Forever!!

A couple of months ago, my cousin shared pictures of Nokras Riverine Hotel, Sagana with me several times. We never got to firm up plans to visit due to conflicting schedules, though I got to visit it during the festive December and it was packed. I never got to really enjoy it. Early in January, she sent me the same pictures (talk about being persistent) and we finally aligned our plans and it was all systems go!

We were off at midday and took the scenic Nyeri-Nanyuki highly which took us two hours. On our arrival, we were quick to notice that the hotel had a respectable number of clientele, with some having lunch as others had a swim.

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-07 at 01.09.38.jpegThe hotel has 3 swimming pools: a main pool for walk-in clients, a baby pool with slides and another solely for the guests at the hotel. We got changed quickly and headed to the pool. It was full and we made a request to use the cottage’s pool. We were looking to have a relaxed afternoon, and were quite pleased when the management obliged. The pool was nice and I especially loved the finishing on the edges of the pool, where there were dolphins that were sprinkling water. We were at the pool for nearly three hours, and had plenty of time to catch up before we headed for a quick shower and change, and some late lunch.

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-07 at 10.55.06.jpegWe dined in the main restaurant and were serenaded by the band playing some old school music and local tunes. The restaurant was a wide array of dishes to choose from but we settled for some chicken. My sister and cousin selected the chicken schnitzel while I had chicken in coconut sauce with sides of fries, coleslaw and vegetables. Their service is quick and the wait staff are quite courteous. The food was okay, though we felt they could have done better with the schnitzel which we found to be quite doughy.WhatsApp Image 2018-04-07 at 11.02.13.jpegAfter lunch, we took a quick stroll through their gardens where they’ve got manicured lawns spacious enough to host an event with a small number of people. We had a look at their conference rooms and were quite with the view of the neighboring hills and River Sagana. We took a moment to take in the view, took a few pictures before heading back to the restaurant to pick up our bags and head back home. We hit the road at about 7 o’clock and sued the Muranga-Nairobi route this time around. There was quite a bit of traffic as we got to Thika and it took us nearly three hours to get back home.

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-07 at 01.07.11.jpegThe hotel is recommendable for when you’re looking to have a quiet out of town plan. We had such a fun time and would be back to try out their accommodation. It is also an ideal place to bring along the kiddies, they have a play area that would keep them entertained most of the day.

PS: Swimming cost us KES 500 (5USD); and lunch cost us KES 1000 (10USD) for a meal and a glass of juice. They are priced as compared to comparable hotels that I have visited preciously.

See you on the other side!

Love & light,

Haziz
